Source: Falcons" Jones could miss season

ATLANTA — The Atlanta Falcons are concerned that wide receiver Julio Jones will miss the remainder of the season with a foot injury, a league source confirmed to ESPN.com.

The Falcons have not confirmed the nature of Jones’ injury but have scheduled a news conference for 2:30 p.m. ET Tuesday.

Jones has a league-leading 41 catches for 580 yards – second only to New Orleans’ Jimmy Graham – and two touchdowns this season. The Pro Bowler also leads the NFL with 248 yards after catches.

The nature of Jones’ injury was earlier reported by Fox Sports.

Jones suffered the injury during Monday night’s 30-28 loss to the New York Jets.

Losing Jones would be a significant blow for a Falcons team already hampered by injuries.

Atlanta (1-4) has not had running back Steven Jackson since he suffered a hamstring injury in Week 2, and receiver Roddy White was knocked out of Monday’s game with a hamstring injury.

Losing Jones would take away quarterback Matt Ryan’s top vertical threat. Jones had eight catches for 99 yards against the Jets, including a 46-yarder.

It remain unclear how Jones was injured. He had been limited in practice throughout the season because of knee problems and he banged up his leg in a Week 4 loss to the New England Patriots.

Harry Douglas is listed as Jones’ backup on Atlanta’s depth chart. The Falcons also have Drew Davis and Kevin Cone in the receiving corps but likely will have to add another receiver to the mix.

Jones would be the fourth starter placed on injured reserve since the start of the regular season, joining defensive end Kroy Biermann, fullback Bradie Ewing and linebacker Sean Weatherspoon.

Weatherspoon was placed on short-term IR with a foot injury and is eligible to return in Week 11.

The Falcons have a bye this week before returning to action against Tampa Bay on Oct. 20.
